HMS Artists Create Sculptures
by Brandy Edgren
In Individual Art this quarter, students are exploring the work of modern painter/sculptor, Nikki de Saint Phalle. She did monumental sculptures often focusing on the abstract female form. Her sculptures were full of bright color and interesting patterns. She worked with innovative new materials like fiberglass and polyester plastics. Students in this class started with a plastic bottle filled with gravel for weight. Then they built armatures out of wire, tape, and fiber fill to complete their structures. Finally, they covered their sculptures in torn cloth dipped in glue and painted them a base color. Currently, they are adding the patterns and colors to make them whimsical creatures inspired by the work of Saint Phalle. Be on the lookout for their finished sculptures in the hallways of HMS.
