HMS Students Write Penpals from Shanghai
by Stephanie Fuehrer
Mrs. Fuehrer’s reading class and Mrs. Hartzog’s English classes are participating in a cross cultural project. They are writing to Chinese students in Shanghai. Mrs. Fuehrer’s daughter, Megan, teaches 7th and 8th graders in Shanghai. One of the assignments she has her students do is write a postcard. Megan thought it would be a great experience for her students to write to actual people so she enlisted her mom to help her out. The Holdrege Middle School students recently received their postcards from China. Needless to say, all were excited to read them and discover a little bit about their Chinese penpal’s lives. The students here at the middle school are busily writing a postcard back to their penpal. The activity will continue with one more exchange of a letter next time. Maycen Wilson says of this activity – “It is very fun and exciting to hear about another person’s life. “ “It is a good way to find out about other places besides the cornfields in Nebraska,” says Clemens Skiles Nitche.
